4.  Student Demographics
Dorothy presented a PowerPoint showing the changing demographics for Monroe and the increase in attendance of non-white students.  Monroe's percentage as compared to 4J and the State of Oregon is:  Monroe- 30.4%, State of Oregon-28.3% and 4J-27.5%.  Monroe's Hispanic population increase is third in thee district.  (Jefferson 15.76%, Kelly 14.28% and Monroe 9.25%)

5.  Ganas Presentation

  • Guests were welcomed and introduced by Rick.  Roscoe Caron from Kelly Middle School, Jim Garcia, LCC, and Carmen Urbina as a parent of a Ganas student (she is also on staff of 4J) shared why the Ganas program was initiated and how it has contributed to the academic success of Hispanic students in Eugene.
  • Ganas is in its ninth year and has been funded primarily by federal, school district and City of Eugene grants for after-school activities.
  • Ganas means "desire" and was created to provide a pro-active academic participation between MEChA, the Chicano student union at the University of Oregon, and parent involvement.  The after school program matches U of O students with middle school students to provide "academic tutoring, interpersonal mentoring, cultural sharing, role-modeling and leadership development to the middle school students."
  • Ganas is designed to provide messages and models of motivation.  The students meet with MEChA mentors three days a week after school and participate in monthly community activities.  The design requires two staff coordinators working with two MEChA students 5-20 hours per week for small stipends.  (ideally one coordinator would speak Spanish and one would be a woman)
  • Upon completion of the presentation Sjana asked to hear feelings from the students present.  Each student shared their struggles and desires emphasizing that they felt the program would be beneficial and something that they would want to do.

5. Next meeting, February 18, 2007.
Budget (There will be no minutes posted for this date.)
