March 7, 2007

Members present:  Rick Gaultney, Dorothy Syfert, Sjana Bancroft-Hundt, Margot Pillette, and Barb Whitlock.

Guests:  Paola Massingham

1.  Agenda was prioritized

2.  Minutes from 2/5/07 and 2/15/07 were approved with a name correction.

3.  Handbook Discussion

Dorothy brought up a discussion regarding possible outdated wording in the Student Handbook.  Site Council recommends that this be presented to the staff.

3.  Monroe Trends and Vision

  • Dorothy presented a PowerPoint showing the changing demographics for Monroe and the increase in free and reduced lunches.  Monroe's percentage is still below 4J and the State of Oregon but there is an upward trend.  Monroe is currently higher than Roosevelt, Cal Young and Spencer Butte but below Jefferson, Kelly and Kennedy and Madison.  It was also pointed out that the Monroe students on free and reduced lunches continue to score better than the district/state averages on OSAT Scores.
  • Rick identified a need to begin thinking about the vision of Monroe to keep moving into the future while consistently meeting the needs of our students.  There is the likelihood that PE will be required for all students in the 2008-09 school year.  With this in mind it was proposed that site council initiate staff wide discussions and planning considering, but not limited to: PE requirements, schedules, building use, half days, and bus schedules.  It was recommended that we invite Todd Hamilton to attend the next Site Council meeting as a resource/process facilitator.  All staff is invited to attend.

4.  Ganas

  1. Paola Massingham has volunteered to be parent facilitator of a Ganas group at Monroe. Paola has already met with Carmen Urbina and she will be meeting with Roscoe Caron from Kelly Middle School, and Jim Garcia, LCC.  They will discuss what is necessary to begin the group pending Mecha involvement.  She will be contacting Sheldon High School and other Monroe parents to possibly work as mentors with Ganas students until the end of the year.  It is hoped that Mecha will be fully on-board by Fall, 2007.
5. Next meeting, April 4, 2007.
