Peter reviewed the process of the PE Scheduling Committee.
            · Meeting since September 2007
            · Researched  what other schools/districts were addressing the PE mandate
            · Surveyed Monroe staff about what options were OK and not OK
            · created a proposed schedule

Because  of larger than anticipated staff reduction and issues with  Highly Qualified certification the schedule was set aside until these issues were resolved. The proposed schedule was presented to the Site Council. This is a 6period day schedule that would allow one year long elective for 7th and 8th grade students. 8th PE would pair with Health and 7th PE would pair with Art. Discussion ensued.

  • Health was seen as adding more change for students. There is enough with the addition of PE
  • Health could be titled “VVV”
  • Domino effect when there is only one year long elective
  • A random elective (Drama, Computers, VVV) could be paired with PE
  • A/B schedule or modification to allow for 2 year long electives
  • PE on A/B schedule – could be workload issue
  • Both Health and electives are  valued but electives is seen as most important

There was consensus that the proposed schedule was not favored.

There was unanimous consensus that the PE Scheduling group should revisit the proposed schedule to try to find a way to let students take music and band. This could involve an A/B schedule or 18-week language and music classes.

Each member also saw the value a mandated Art and Health class to pair with PE while also seeing the possible problems of decreased choice for 7th and 8th graders. Site asked that the PE Scheduling group look at the recommendation again, considering what is best for kids, our school program, and given our staffing realities.

The Portrait of a Monroe Student is coming together. Peter is having it illustrated and will present it at a Parent Meeting.
