Members Present: Peter Tromba, Peggy Quinn, Dorothy Syfert, Sjana Barcroft-Hundt,
Pam Schmieding, Shirley Madathil, Steve Robare
Meeting Time:
Site Council will meet on the 1st Thursday of each month. Meetings will begin
at 3:30pm, and adjourn at 5:00pm.
Parent Membership:
There was discussion concerning parent involvement, recruiting, and retaining
parents once on the committee. Veteran members expressed hunches as to why
some parents did not remain on the council for the full year.
*The goal is to have two parent representatives per grade level.
*Ideally, at least 1 parent representative is to regularly report to our PTO.
*Peter will be recruiting at Open House.
Teacher Membership:
Currently, there are three reps. from 6th grade team, two reps. from 7th grade
team, and two reps. from 8th grade team. The 6th grade reps. shared that
due to other involvements in extra-curricular activities, committees, and
IEP meetings, their members will likely rotate into the site council meeting
schedule.
There was a concern about unfair advantages in decision-making for Budget
requests, and other possible grade-level needs. The 6th grade reps. will only
have two votes to contribute, rather than three, so that all teams have equal
voting contributions.
6th Grade Reps.: Sjana, Peggy, Molly
7th Grade Reps.: Pam, Steve
8th Grade Reps.: Dorothy, Shirley
Classified Staff Membership:
Margot Pillette will be the classified rep. In the future, an additional classified
staff rep. might be added.
Student Membership:
Although students have attended a meeting or two in the past, it was decided
that the site council would like to have consistent student members attend
on a regular basis. Much discussion ensued, and a few possibilities of student
selection came up.
Possibilities:
~STAR Staff members select a rep. from each grade
~Sign-up with Peter
~Student reps. chosen out of classes (possibly Block)
(Block teachers will discuss this idea at their meetings next week, and provide
site council with feedback.)
Meeting Duties:
Signing up for duties will happen at our next meeting. One decision was made.
Full-time Convener: Peter
Substitute Convener: Dorothy
Literacy Grant $:
Kay Mehas, a District representative, is requesting information from schools.
*A list of students who are identified as not meeting the benchmark in reading
for
2006-2007. (6th Grade is the focus.)
*A progress report of what our school is doing to help these students. Peter
and
Dorothy are working on this report.
Our building was given $15,000 to aid our current 6th grade students in reading.
This money was given based on last year's incoming 6th graders, who are currently
our 7th graders.
*Last year (06-07): 127 of those 6th graders came in not reading at
grade level.
Peter and Dorothy have begun brainstorming ways to appropriately spend this
money. It would be helpful if the 6th grade team joined in on the brainstorming.
Some ideas so far:
*Tackle irregular attendance---possible perfect attendance awards, recognition
*Computer/Technology additions
*Visual Tracking Testing
*Test for Irlen Syndrome {perceptual disorder}
(Jennifer Baer could be a resource due to her previous training.)
FYI:
Currently, Monroe has the highest number of SPED students it has ever had in
the past 15 years. There are currently 65 students across the grades.
Diversity Mapping: A future agenda item
The District wants to know what schools are doing to close the achievement
gap, and make students feel welcome. Peter, José, Dorothy, and others
will begin working on this information. The District is expecting this report
by 10/12/07.
