October 4, 2007

Members attending: Margot, Peter, Shirley M., Sjana, Dorothy, Pam, Molly, Joel Iboa, Jeff Kruger, Lori Brody, John Wood. No students--yet.

Agenda started with the "issue bin" for future agendas.

Parents asked to relay info to the parent's group.

Discussion ensued concerning the role of Site Council. We spoke of the perspectives each brings and the varying "stakes" we all have. All are valued. We spoke of those things in the context of Monroe's vision and mission.

In terms of the School Improvement Plan, we discussed how our goals are tied to our mission. They should be easy to understand at a glance.

We started defining the "Portrait" of the student, esp. the exiting 8th grade student. What does he/she look like, act like, etc. That's very tied to the mission/vision. Portrait includes: academics, personal/social aspects, career vision, and community service.

In discussions with Sheldon recently (okay, it was the people there), Peter asked what they thought the biggest problem was for incoming Monroe students. Surprisingly, they answered, "Stress Management". Discussion involved what stress management meant to our students and how to begin to arm them with tools to handle it.

Dorothy presented some findings in regard to student achievement and low SES students. A big discussion resulted on how to more accurately identify and serve free and reduced lunch students. Snacks for everyone at certain time in the day is an example.

Next meeting: Nov. 1st at 3:30. Agenda items include group agreements and refining the portrait of the 8th grader.
