October 4, 2006

Minutes were read and approved for the previous meeting.

Language Arts Adoption -Rick read current recommendation/guidelines from the Instruction Office. We'll need members from each grade level to represent our school's team. A tentative team from our building's team was discussed.

School Improvement Plan - Literacy Improvement Plan: How to educate the staff on the plan was discussed. It was suggested that a mind map with big visuals to represent the big ideas of the plan be used. The visual representation will make information available quickly.

Work on Team Update - The team will have one large group meeting the 1st Wednesday of the month, and a work meeting scheduled for the 3rd Wednesday of the month. We discussed the need for data to be the driving force for making changes in the system we already have in place. Changes will be made to help all children if possible, not just for change's sake. Current teams include climate, literacy, and data.

Enrichment Math Support - An enrichment class will be taught by Sarah Kerr-Daly that will support kids who are struggling in core math skills and facts. This will start the 9th week of this school year. It will be for 6th grade only at this point. Depending on need, it will be as short as one quarter, or may involve the entire year. There was consensus for support.

Reading Mentors - Eight people will be coming from OR Community Credit Union to be Reading Mentors for our building. Training will take place Oct. 25th. Dorothy and Crystal will work in conjunction with the mentors to maximize mentor interests and skills.

Site Council Parents - We need them! Representation for the Latino voice is desired. Another staff member is also needed.

Content Literacy Continuum - We reviewed an article with the 5 major points of this program.
